Distortion Effects in Equal Area Unit Maps

چکیده
Abstract Maps that correctly represent the geographic size and shape of regions, taking into account scaling generalization, have disadvantage small regions can easily be overlooked or not seen at all. Hence, for some map use tasks where are importance, alternative types needed. One option is so-called equal area unit maps (EAUMs), every enumeration has same size, possibly also basic such as squares hexagons. The geometrical distortion EAUMs, however, leads to a more difficult search well falsification topological relationships spatial patterns. To describe these distortions, set analytical measures proposed. But it turns out expressiveness rather limited. better understand model influence two user studies were conducted. study on in EAUMs (also with aim reconstruct strategies users) revealed how important consider local topology (e.g. corner border positions regions) during generation process. With regard pattern identification, could shown significantly increase detection rate extreme values. On other hand, global lateral gradients geostatistical hot spots often get blurred even lost. As consequence, task-oriented selection further developments recommended.

Equal Area World Maps: A Case Study
If one wishes to produce a world map that displays area-based data, such as the extent of rain forests, the range of butterfly migrations, or the access of people in various regions to medical facilities, then it is often appropriate to use a base map that shows the areas of all regions of the earth’s surface in their correct proportions. Such a map is called an equal area or equivalent map by ...
متن کاملImage Distortion Maps
Subjects examined image pairs consisting of an original and a reproduction created using either JPEG compression or digital halftoning. Subjects marked locations on the reproduction that differed detectably from the original. We refer to the distribution of error marks by the subjects as image distortion maps. The empirically obtained image distortion maps are compared to the visible difference...
متن کاملRational Triangles with Equal Area
We consider the set of triangles in the plane with rational sides and a given area A. We show there are infinitely many such triangles for each possible area A. We also show that infinitely many such triangles may be constructed from a given one, all sharing a side of the original triangle, unless the original is equilateral. There are three families of triangles (including the isosceles ones) ...
متن کاملSystematic Distortion in Cosmic Microwave Background Maps
To minimize instrumentally induced systematic errors, cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy experiments measure temperature differences across the sky using paires of horn antennas, temperature map is recovered from temperature differences obtained in sky survey through a map-making procedure. To inspect and calibrate residual systematic errors in recovered temperature maps is important ...
متن کاملEqual Area Polygons in Convex Bodies
In this paper, we consider the problem of packing two or more equal area polygons with disjoint interiors into a convex body K in E such that each of them has at most a given number of sides. We show that for a convex quadrilateral K of area 1, there exist n internally disjoint triangles of equal area such that the sum of their areas is at least 4n 4n+1 . We also prove results for other types o...
